Pandering or pasta?

It’s not often that “fashion” and food go hand in hand, but any Italian brand would be missing out on an opportunity if they turned down collaborating with a household name like Barilla, the largest pasta producer in the world. Not everyone is interested in capital-F Fashion, but everyone on the Italian peninsula knows a thing or two about pasta. So, the GCDS x Barilla ad campaign, directed by British self-portraitist and filmmaker, Nadia Lee Cohen, seems a perfect chance for a fresh Italian streetwear brand to conquer a new demographic nel Bel Paese.

This isn’t the first time that Cohen has collaborated with GCDS for an advertising campaign as her unconventional but captivating photography and art direction styles lend themselves well to the brand’s edgy and kitsch aesthetic. What is also important is how both Cohen and GCDS seem to use a lot of their work to give a platform to queer artists and illustrate their beauty. The Barilla advert, entitled “Dinner’s Ready” is no exception, starring figures such as Violet Chachki, Nikita Dragun and the brand’s co-founder, Giuliano Calza.
