The gentrification of San Salvario in Turin
Unfortunately, this rapid gentrification is now threatening the local community, and we can see many parallels to the classic case of Notting Hill - once an area of violence and riots, the area is now one of the wealthiest in London with very little of its original authenticity. In a similar way, the influx of young people, trendy bars and weekend nightlife have meant that today house prices in San Salvario are rising drastically, and the working-class community originally from the area can no longer afford to live there. The change has been so rapid that it also meant that many local shops have shut down to make space for the demand for new restaurants and bars. The important issue at the moment then has once again become saving San Salvario, as again its authenticity and sense of community is at stake.
