South Africa had a good start, scoring through Habana in the 8th minute, only for Italy to immediately reply with a try from driving maul in the corner, scored by van Schalkwyk. Canna converted from the touchline, unlike Lambie, giving Italy a 7-5 lead. South Africa pulled ahead once more through Damian de Allende after some good midfield play left an overlap for him to accelerate into. Lambie this time kicked the conversion to make the score 12-7. Some infringing in the scrum led to an Italian penalty which they did kick, rather magnificently from 50-odd metres, to keep within two points of the Boks.
