Held twice a year, in order to showcase the new, up-and-coming trends which will be appearing each year, Fashion Week occurs in all four of the fashion capitals in the world, Milan, Paris, London and New York. From February 18th - 24th, Milan Fashion Week demonstrated the Autumn/Winter trends of 2020/2021. This Fashion Week, a decision was made by many organisers of the event to stage some shows behind closed doors. This was due to the growing threat of coronavirus in Northern Italy, causing the fashion capital to remain on lockdown. However, this did not prohibit the excellent shows from taking place, and the public were able to see the incredible looks thanks to livestreams, so the displays of the new trends were not too badly affected. This is true for Giorgio Armani’s incredible display of Autumn/Winter fashion, which was staged in private, but live streamed for many to enjoy. Armani’s depiction of romanticism in his garments displayed a sultry yet elegant mix of black and pink, a combination elevating sophistication yet also including a feminine twist. However, Armani’s show was not only a depiction of romanticism, but also an ode to China. Including styles from its 2009 and 2019 archives, the garments encompassed a Chinese style, as a message of love for the country during this current fight against coronavirus. This is a clear and beautiful way in which fashion can create bonds between countries and nations, as fashion is universal.

Salvatore Ferragamo’s collection, inspired by the works of Carl Jung and his seven traditional female archetypes, including the lover, the mother and the queen, made an even bigger statement this February, with his looks promoting sustainability as well. Using old leather from his previous looks, Ferragamo fashioned the ladies’ shoes and bags out of this leftover material, creating a statement about the ways in which fashion designers can and should avoid waste in these times of climate crisis. Therefore, it is evident that outlooks are changing, as they should be. The climate crisis of today should urge many individuals in fashion to make more environmentally friendly and sustainable choices, in order to help save our planet.

With both of these shows at Milan Fashion Week as an example, it could be said that fashion is one of the most important ways of creating a message, whether it be to an individual country in a time of need or to the whole planet, urging for sustainability, fashion makes fundamental statements and spreads important messages through the stories behind the garments depicted

on the catwalk.
