On the
Macedonian
Matters
Misirkov's most important writing is undoubtedly the book Za
makedonckite raboti (On Macedonian Matters) published in 1903
in Sofia, in which he laid down the principles of the modern
Macedonian language. According to this book, the Macedonian
language should be based on dialects from the central part of
Macedonia which are the Veles, Prilep, Bitola and Ohrid dialects.
He also used those dialects in the book itself. Most copies of the
book were confiscated and destroyed by the Bulgarian police and
IMRO activists, shortly after the book was published. At his own
time, the book had little or no impact and did not become popular
until the middle of the 1940s.Misirkov's principles played a
crucial role in the future codification of the Macedonian language,
right after World War II.
