Design Technology – Mill
Win Coll’s sports facilities aren’t the only area that is struggling to keep up
with the times.
Built in 1936, at a time when woodwork and
metalwork were the only practical skills taught,
Mill’s workshop now reverberates to the sound
of computer-controlled machinery and its
three classrooms double as Computer-Aided
Design studios. Featuring contemporary architecture that reflects
what is going on inside, abundant natural light,
efficient IT and electromechanical services, and
integrated extraction systems, this will equip the
School to deliver modern education in design
technology and engineering.
With the redevelopment of this part of the
campus comes the opportunity to create a
high-tech design and fabrication facility by
refurbishing and extending the original building,
which is held in some esteem by the College. Benefiting from a combination of these vastly
improved facilities and Win Coll’s ongoing
expert tuition, even more boys will go on
to study Engineering, Computer Science,
Architecture or Design at universities such as
Cambridge, MIT and Imperial College London.
“Mill is the springboard for
future entrepreneurs, engineers,
innovators and technological
revolutionaries! This project
offers Winchester a splendid
opportunity to inspire
the coming generations of
Wykehamists. It offers them
contemporary architecture of
good design equipped with
the tools for the modern
age needed to restore the
UK as a world-leader in
technological development
and intelligent design.”
