OLD COLLEGIANS’ UPDATES
With a name like that …
Much-travelled scientist Fred EINSTEIN( Parnell, 1954-58) recently made an 8-week trip to New Zealand and he caught up with old friends and family. On leaving College, Fred went to the University of Canterbury where he completed a BSc, MScHons and a PhD, followed by two years at the University of British Columbia as a Post- Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemistry. After a brief stint travelling around Europe he returned to British Columbia in 1967 to the Department of Chemistry at Simon Fraser University, where he stayed until 2000 in various distinguished professorial positions. Along the way he has delivered 300 plus scientific papers.
During that lengthy latter period he undertook several sabbaticals as a senior visiting fellow in Oxford and as an exchange scientist in Basel. In 1965 he married Judith Tripney and they have two adult children and three grandchildren.
His interests are hiking, travel, mentoring science students, and classical music. A great traveller, recent journeys have taken him to Ecuador, Columbia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Morocco – to name just a few. Walking at Maligne Canyon near Jasper, in the Canadian Rockies, where he goes most years en route to Edmonton to see his daughter and
family, by chance he caught up with fellow academic and Old Collegian Jeff HUNTER( Peart, 1954-58). georgia kirschberg with HRH prince edward
A royal occasion
During her time at King’ s Georgia KIRSCHBERG( Taylor, 2010-11), who was awarded the Taylor Bursary, earned her Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Gold Award, by playing hockey, learning Italian, coaching water polo, volunteering at Waikato Hospice and undertaking a four-day expedition to Cape Reinga.
In 2012 she completed a gap year at Royal High School in Bath and the opportunity arose to have her Gold Award presented in London. Georgia was the only non-UK resident among the 60 recipients to be awarded this year at St James’ s Palace. She says,“ Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, were keen to talk about New Zealand and discuss her plans for tertiary education.”
The occasion marked the 50th anniversary of the award programme which challenges people aged over 14 to complete personal challenges in areas such as physical, problem solving, service and team skills.
