OLD COLLEGIANS’ OCCASIONS

Playing Against AGS

The annual golf and tennis matches between KCOCA and its Auckland Grammar School counterpart have taken place since the last Courier. The former has a proud history dating back nearly 80 years during which teams have met on over 50 occasions, while the tennis series has a shorter record with seven games to date.
The KCOCA Team
TENNIS: On a blustery Sunday in mid-November a keen group of Old Collegians, organised by Phil CAUGHEY( St John’ s, 1968-72), took on a slightly depleted Auckland Grammar side in the tennis clash, this year held at King’ s. Team members were Laurie SMITH( Town 1944-48), Bill JACK( Parnell, 1951-55), Mike HALLWRIGHT( Selwyn, 1972-76), Mike CAUGHEY( St John’ s, 1968-72), Greg COOKSON( Major, 1991-92), Daniel LEM( Peart, 1988-92), Nick YATES( St John’ s, 1972-76), Peter RIDLEY( St John’ s, 1973-76), Gavin de MALMANCHE( School, 1952-56), John ROBB( St John’ s, 1953-57), Andrew
BARNS-GRAHAM( School, 1980-84) and John MORROW( Averill, 1988-92).
With variations in both numbers and tennis form over the last couple of years, it has been decided that camaraderie is more important than organising School v School matches, so the policy is to put together for some of the games a number of King’ s / Grammar pairings playing against each other. This has worked well, with the games easier to organise and the pairings more evenly matched.
The day finished with a splendid afternoon tea, while watching an exhibition match, which was won by King’ s, represented by Mark NIELSON( Averill, 1991-94) and Jack HOPKINS( Year 13, Marsden).
Thanks are due to all who participated and especially to Barry Schmidt from AGS for his enthusiasm over many years in organising the Auckland Grammar side.

GOLF: On Sunday 10 February the weather was magnificent, befitting a great day of golf at the Auckland Golf Club. A King’ s team again organised by Andy
DONALD( Marsden, 1964-68) included Jeremy COE( Major, 1993-??), Tim MacAVOY( Peart, 1964-68), Rainsford HORROCKS( School, 1969-73), Malcolm GRIFFITHS( Selwyn, 1959-62), Bruce MELLOR( School, 1962-66), Bruce RENSHAW( Marsden, 1961-65), Alastair
MACFARLANE( Selwyn / Major, 1966- 70), Pip PAINE( Selwyn, 1963-67), Grant HARGRAVE( School, 1963-67), Ian GRIERSON( St John’ s, 1951-54), Ross GORDON( St John’ s, 1965-67), Rob STOREY( St John’ s, 1959-63) and Steve
RENDELL( Marsden 1964-67).
AGS won 12.5 to 8.5; the best stableford was John Adam 37 from Rob Storey, R Horrocks and G Hargrave on 36; best team stableford was Greg Long, Tim MacAvoy, Dave Thompson and Rainsford Horrocks.
The Blair Hargrave Memorial Trophy was won by Rob Storey.
Thanks are due to the Auckland Golf Club for their help, especially to Tom
SINCLAIR( Peart, 1958-62) who provided liaison support and scoring on the day; also to Andy who is stepping down as organiser after several years, which means a new organiser is required for next year!
