New-York Historical Society - Westward Expansion

After a lesson on perspective and close observation of a landscape painting , third graders were tasked with drawing the same during history sessions taught through our partnership with the New-York Historical Society . In this unit , they learn the reasons for westward expansion and examine a variety of primary and secondary sources . During the era of westward expansion , pioneers drew the landscapes they saw as a means of sharing what the land looked like with people back home . Learning Collaborations

Close Looking at the Guggenheim and Met

“ To see takes time .” Georgia O ’ Keefe ’ s quote applies aptly to the “ close looking ” that our boys recently engaged in during signature learning experiences at the Guggenheim and Met . At the Guggenheim , second graders began their unit-long , multi-week collaboration with the Museum in a session that involved discussion of an abstract work by Lee Seung-taek , followed by collage making in the Museum studio . In the Met ’ s Greek and Roman Art Galleries , eighth graders made concrete observations about various sculptures , connecting to bigger themes , and then sketched what they saw .
