Kiln Drying Is an Effective Process for Removing Moisture
The process of reduction of the moisture content in wood by means of artificially
controlling the heat, air circulation and humidity is called kiln drying. If the drying is
done in a kiln, then the product is called kiln-dried timber or lumber. Natural air drying of
lumber is a long process so in order to speed up drying, kiln is used which completes
drying the product very quickly.
Kiln drying can be defined as a process of placing sawn lumber into kilns and then
heated air is circulated within it. Kiln’s temperature is controlled so that it helps to reach
wood’s equilibrium moisture content. This process is superior to air drying process and
thus it is most preferred for tackling various types of tasks like smelting ores and
creating cement etc. Some of the advantages of this process are:-
It is more effective in removing moisture.
It has greater control over degrading.
It takes shorter drying time.
There is no seasonal or climatic variation in drying time.
