Sustainability & toys a winning combination for young minds
I believe the combination of Sustainability & Toys will play a very important part of learning in the future . Today , students learn not only from school and home but from the environment as well – whether it is social media , television or other digital mediums .
Upcycler ’ s lab ’ s journey and experience in working closely with governments from Asia , Europe and the Middle east .
More people are gravitating towards experiential learning rather than textbook learning . Toys & games are going to be an important part of this experiential learning journey for the younger generation . Our sustainability games make them think about the issue that we want to cover while products like flash card for toddlers help them understand about consumption in their daily lives while they are learning the alphabet .
Some of the key insights we have learnt through our work with governments in Asian countries is that kids in Asia tend to lean towards competition-based games and games focussed on Science , Math and English language reading skills . On the other hand , in Western countries , there ’ s more emphasis on cooperative gaming , and gaming as a means of learning and as an activity in itself .
In different countries , we had to redesign our games to ensure it fits with the local environment . In Singapore , we joined hands with a waste management company to understand the solid waste segregation systems there and redesigned our games to suit the local set up .
There have also been language barriers that we ’ ve had to overcome . For example , in Kuwait , we were asked to translate our games into Arabic which is a common requirement in the Middle East .
Through these learnings , we now have two distinct ways in which we work with our clients :
• Firstly , we have an existing product portfolio that includes games , puzzles , story books and flash cards based on ocean conservation , waste segregation and other environmental issues . We can modify these games or co-brand them based on a clients ’ requirements when there is a minimum MOQ where we take care of the design and manufacturing angles .
• Secondly , if there is a specific environmental issue that an organization wants to work on which hasn ’ t been covered in our existing portfolio , then we also provide
Sustainability has been voted as the No . 1 issue on the minds of young people today , especially with climate change looming like a heavy cloud over the human race . It is going to be an extremely important topic in the years ahead and we could also see the impact of this in Spielwarenmesse , the world ’ s largest toy fair , where they now have a green toy sustainability pavilion . We need to equip our future generations to deal with problems that their ancestors have never faced . That ’ s why I feel that sustainability & toys is definitely going to be a winning combination in the future .
