Kickboxing is an extremely aggressive sport with a high potential for injuries because of the intense force that is delivered and received during the fight.

Some injuries associated with this sport are:

Concussion, Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, Sesamoiditis, Neck Pain, Low back pain, Shoulder pain, Shoulder tendonitis, Lacerations, Contusions, Finger Fractures, Groin strain, Hamstring strain, Knee collateral ligament sprain, Ankle, ligament sprain, Hematoma, Dislocated joints and tendons

Sesamoiditis is inflammation of a sesamoid bone of the foot that is linked to overuse – it is a repetitive motion related injury. When kicking, the foot that is supporting the active leg is elevated onto its metatarsal heads, thus allowing the supporting leg to pivot. There are two round shape bones underneath the head of the long bone behind the big toe. Irritation and inflammation of these bones causes pain just behind and under the big toe, due to the continuous action of kicking during this sport.

Treatment:

It is usually very easy to treat this type of injury. In order for it to get better, resting, icing and elevating the extremity must be done. However, it should be further assessed by a podiatrist if these treatments do not help the condition and it continues to be present.

The injured person is able to return kickboxing as soon as the pain is completely gone and they feel as though their foot is back to normal. But if they start to feel pain in the foot again, the individual should stop kickboxing and continue the treatment process once again or see a podiatrist to help relieve the problem.
