RECAP OF THE 2025 KANSAS AGENTS ' LEGISLATIVE DAY by Karlyn Raleigh, KAIA
On Tuesday, March 4, independent agents from across Kansas gathered at the State Capitol for the 2025 Kansas Agents Legislative Day. This annual event provided a valuable opportunity for agents to engage with policymakers, discuss key industry issues, and advocate for legislative solutions that support the insurance sector.
A MORNING OF INSIGHTS AND ENGAGEMENT
The day began with a warm welcome from Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins on the House floor, setting the tone for a productive day of discussion and advocacy.
Attendees then moved to the Senate Financial Institutions & Insurance( FI & I) Committee Meeting, where legislators and industry professionals examined current legislative efforts impacting the insurance industry.
Following the committee meeting, participants attended an issues briefing led by KAIA General Counsel Beth Smoller, KAIA CEO Dave Hulcher, and KAIA Lobbyist Dan Murray. The session provided indepth analysis on several pressing topics, including:
• Surplus Lines Modernization( HB 2087): This bill, introduced in partnership with WSIA and APCIA, would modernize eligibility criteria for non-admitted insurers writing business in Kansas, and allow motor vehicles dealer to place liability coverage with non-admitted insurers. It passed the House with a unanimous 121-0 vote, signaling strong bipartisan support.
