COVERED
LE: Breaking through previous self-perceptions and
perceptions of others of their own abilities. Seeing
themselves as owners, top producers and executives.
K: Why did you choose this career?
LE: This career allowed me to take advantage of both my
giftings and the skills I’ve developed throughout my career.
K: What, if any, obstacles do you see for women in the
insurance industry?
LE: Preconceived impressions of where the women belong.
Both within the industry and in the supporting public and
industries.
K: How do you think leaders can help overcome those
obstacles?
LE: I believe that mentoring programs can be effective.
K; With insurance being a traditionally male-dominated
industry, have you seen or experienced any positive
changes in diverse representation?
LE: Yes. Over my career time, I have seen many changes
and many static places also.
K: Why do you think women and men are perceived
differently at work?
LE: Because of tradition. Meaning past history and
mindset biases.
K: Working in an industry dominated by men can leave
women feeling as if they are on the outside, looking in,
struggling to be heard at meetings, and excluded from
opportunities or social events. Breaking into that ‘boys’
club’ can be a challenge. How do you suggest women
“break-in?”
LE: We cannot force others to change without their
willingness. We cannot control what we cannot change.
So, it is upon women to see themselves as they want
others to see them. We need to create our own vision for
others to see us through who we truly are; remove limits
from our own view of ourselves and never allow others to
define who we are.
