FEATURED SPEAKERS Angie Heavener Angie is the principal of Insurance Training Plus, a professional training and consulting firm focused on education and agency operations. She began her insurance career in 1971 joining her family’s agency. She held numerous positions in the agency including CSR, producer, and eventually agency owner. Angie has served on numerous state and national committees dedicated to insurance education. She holds both the CIC and CPIA designations. Angie teaches numerous management and continuing education seminars throughout the United States and conducts internal E&O audits. She also testifies in E&O trials and writes articles in various association magazines. Joe Leahy Joseph “Joe” Leahy is co-owner and founder of Leahy and Brown Insurance + Realty, Inc., in Springfield, Massachusetts. Leahy was elected to the IIABA executive committee in April 2013 and was installed at the association’s 2013 Fall Leadership Conference in San Antonio. He previously served as chief of staff to Massachusetts State Sen. Martin T. Reilly (D-Springfield). At the state association level, Leahy was elected to the executive committee of MAIA in 2001 and served as chairman in 2005 and Massachusetts director on the Big “I” national board from 2008 to 2013. In 2013, Leahy received the MAIA Henry F. Barry, Jr. Memorial Pacesetter Award which is awarded to an agent who has contributed his or her talent, time and energy for the betterment of the agency system and is the highest honor that MAIA bestows. At the national association level, Leahy has served on numerous Big “I” committees and task forces including the Government Affairs Committee, the Tax Task Force and the InsurPac board of Trustees. Alton Carter Alton is a former foster child and police officer. He was the first person in his family to graduate from high school and college. Now the director of youth ministries for the First United Methodist Church of Stillwater, Oklahoma, the Oklahoma State University alum has dedicated his life to working with young people. In April of 2015, his debut book, THE BOY WHO CARRIED BRICKS, was published by The RoadRunner Press. On April 9, 2016, the nonfiction title won the 2016 Oklahoma Book Award. The book is a true recount of Carter’s hard- scrabble life growing up on the plains and in the small towns of Oklahoma. In 2015, Carter founded the Alton Carter Inspire Foundation with the goal of assisting young people who have lived in foster care, group homes, or DHS juvenile facilities in securing a college degree. A percentage of the book sales from THE BOY WHO CARRIED BRICKS goes to this cause. Carter makes his home in central Oklahoma, with his wife, Kristin, and their two sons, Kelton and Colin.
