ACTIVITY 1 - THE FALLING GAME The falling game Aim: The falling game further contributes to enhancing team work, trust and respect for peers. Materials: None Instructions: - The group form a close circle, with the exception of one child. - The children then hold their hands out in front of them with palms facing towards the middle (like a traffic officer would do to stop traffic). - The remaining child stands in the middle of the circle and makes himself or herself as stiff as he or she can. The facilitator then explains that the child in the middle will fall in any direction he or she wishes (forwards, backwards, right or left), and the rest of the group need to gently push him or her to the other side of the group. - After falling and being pushed for a while, the facilitator can ask the group if there is anyone who would like to volunteer to go into the middle. - The volunteer will exchange his or her position with the child in the middle. Discussion Discuss the questions below: - How did you feel when you had to fall? (Directed to those who experienced being in the middle.) - How did it feel when someone fell towards you and you had to catch that person and gently push him or her towards the other side of the circle? - What if we did not catch that person in the middle? How would it have made the person in the middle feel? - How would you have felt if you did not catch that person? - How did it feel to be caught by someone in your group? (Directed to those who experienced being in the middle.) - What made it scary for you to go in the middle? (Directed to those children who did not volunteer to go to the middle.) - Talk about trusting friends and the value of friends. ACTIVITY 2 - MAKING A FEEL-GOOD QUILT Making a feel-good quilt Aim: The quilt activity contributes to cooperation, making choices, fostering a positive outlook, getting to know each other, group cohesion and planning. Materials: Finger-paint, A3 paper, pencils, newspaper, refuse bags for aprons, pegs to fasten the aprons, masking tape, Prestik Instructions: - Give each child a refuse bag and a peg. Show the group how to put on the apron and how to fasten it with a peg. Encourage them to help each other. - Hand out an A3 piece of paper, pencils and finger-paint to each group member. - Give every member a piece of newspaper to work on. - Explain to the group how a quilt looks like. Tell them it is a huge blanket with blocks, and each little block tells its own story. Every group member will have a block of paper to paint that will be attached to each other afterwards with masking tape. It will look like a huge blanket against the wall after it is posted on the wall with Prestik. - They have to finger paint any happy experience/situation or memory they had. - The group f6
