International Day for Tolerance
Cultivating diversity
On November 17 , 2021 , to mark this day
established by the United Nations in 1996 , Keiss Library worked with Dr . SoYoung Kang , instructor of EDU 351 , to create an event celebrating international diversity . Open to the entire GMercyU community , participants painted a nation flag of their choice and pinned their heritage on the world map display , which remained open for library visitors to contribute after the event .
" Collaborating with Keiss Library on the World Flags Event was so much fun !" said Kang , who originally brought the idea to the library staff . " Our wonderful librarians were very organized ... what a great collaboration we had to help students learn and have fun at the same time !"
Attendees learned to use watercolor to paint their flags .
In February , the library welcomed Albert Fried- Cassorla ' s Introduction to Poetry class to a Poetry Book Fair ! Students learned about the course ' s
research guide , toured the library stacks , and interacted with a poetry display featuring various genres and movements . Highlights included students browsing , handling , checking out titles , and talking about their favorite poets .
Poetry Book Fair
Appreciating literature
" Students clearly enjoyed their time in that 90-minute session . More tellingly , their resulting presentation work was excellent . I believe that the book fair made an incredibly valuable contribution to their education . I thank the staff wholeheartedly !"
