Communication to School Staff: When communicating with the region about a confirmed case, DO NOT GIVE NAMES. Local news outlets have been publishing school emails and we should not be publishing the names of sick community members. It is critical to maintain confidentiality of the student or staff member as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Inform the community WHERE THIS PERSON INTERACTED with the rest of the community without revealing their identity (e.g., elementary school, buildings, grades, rooms, and/or events). Add additional information if possible, such as, the period of time this person has been ill and if the community is past the 14-day recommended distancing period. Encourage anyone concerned about their health to CONTACT A DOCTOR and include contact information for the state health department. Reiterate in your communications that custodial staff is CLEANING AND DISINFECTING school buildings routinely. DO NOT COMMUNICATE ABOUT A POSSIBLE PRIMARY OR SECONDARY EXPOSURE to COVID-19, ONLY CONFIRMED CASES. State, given the spread of the disease, that such an event was anticipated. Everyone should assume there is a chance of exposure at some point. Include guidance about self-monitoring, symptoms, and hygiene. Raise awareness about COVID-19 without increasing fear. Speak out against negative behaviors, including negative statements on social media about groups of people, or exclusion of people who pose no risk from regular activities. Be cautious about the images that are shared. Make sure they portray school staff following social distancing guidelines. (For example, do not show staff handing out packets or meals close together). 05
