Postgraduate Prospectus 2017
Medical Ethics and Law
Key Information
Overview
For nearly 30 years, Keele’s MA in Medical Ethics and Law has
offered an opportunity for students to undertake in-depth study
of the ethical and legal issues that arise in health care and related
fields. Taught by the Centre for Professional Ethics and the School
of Law, the programme aims to deepen your understanding of
healthcare ethics and law, and to enhance your ability to think
systematically about the moral and legal issues that healthcare
professionals and those involved in healthcare management and policy
may face in the course of their work. It can also provide a foundation
for pursuing further study at doctoral level. The programme can be
taken full-time, part-time or on a modular basis over up to five years,
and is available to intercalating medical students.
Teaching is delivered in short intensive blocks, enabling those in
full-time employment to take the course part-time over two years
and fit it around the demands of their work, wherever they are based.
Between the teaching blocks you will undertake personal study based
on the materials discussed during the blocks and write your assignments.
You will be allocated a superviso r to advise and support you in your
studies and dissertation, either in person or via email or phone.

• Moral Theory and Medical Ethics
• Principles of Medical Law
• Life, Death and the Human Body
• Healthcare, Justice and Society
These modules are regularly updated to reflect current developments
and each is assessed by a single essay assignment. There are no exams.
Students who successfully complete the four taught modules but choose

Students undertaking the MA also write a dissertation on a topic in

for full-time and intercalating students and in a subsequent year for
part-time and modular students. A prize sponsored by the law firm
