Mathematics
(Combined Honours)
UCAS code:
various (see University prospectus)
Duration: 3 years
Degree awarded: BSc Mathematics
and (other subject)
In a combined honours degree at Keele,
each of two principal subjects is studied
separately and equally (with a few minor
exceptions). This means, of course, that
the student must be fully committed to
both subjects.
On successful completion of the degree,
having studied two areas extensively,
the graduate has particular flexibility with
regard to career choice and employability.
In Year 1 you will study core material
in calculus and algebra, which all
mathematicians should know. In
subsequent years you can begin to
tailor your programme according to your
own strengths or interests; for instance,
you can specialise in pure or applied
mathematics, or explore probability and
modelling. You can also engage in a
project, giving you experience in report
writing and oral presentation as well as in
more independent mathematical study.
Degree programmes
with Work Placement
Year
UCAS Code:
various (see University prospectus)
Duration: 4/5 years
Degree awarded: BSc/MMath
Mathematics
The Mathematics with Work Placement
Year programme is a formal arrangement
that enables you to undertake a
placement year in industry as part of a
four-year sandwich degree. We have
excellent links with employers to help
students to find placements.
Degree programmes
with International Year
Our single honours, integrated master’s
and combined honours programmes
may be taken with a full academic
year abroad. This provides you with
an opportunity to expand your cultural
horizons, to make your CV stand out from
the crowd, and to enrich your academic
and professional outlook.
The International Year takes place
between your second and third years
as a complementary year of study.
It does not need to involve mathematics
modules, thought there are some
restrictions on the type of module that
you can take. The year will be spent at
one or two of our partner institutions.
For assessment purposes this is a
pass/fail year.
Countries visited include Australia,
Finland, Switzerland, Japan, Canada,
USA, Netherlands, Iceland, France
and Norway.
Combined honours Mathematics students
who have demonstrated a particular
aptitude for the subject may be allowed
to transfer to single honours Mathematics
at the end of the first or second semester
of their first year.
