6 | Mathematics Degree Programmes This section outlines the Mathematics degree programmes on offer. The detailed structure and a glimpse at some of the content of these programmes are given in the later sections. Each of our programmes provides an opportunity for breadth and depth of study in pure, applied and statistical mathematics, while allowing students to concentrate on areas of individual interest, especially in later years. We recognise that students will enter university with varying educational backgrounds and we have designed the first year of our programmes accordingly. In particular, we do not assume that students have studied Further Mathematics at A-level. Mathematics (Single Honours) UCAS code: G100 Duration: 3 years Degree awarded: BSc Mathematics The single honours Mathematics programme is for students with a keen interest in mathematics. No other discipline need be studied, but in Year 1 there is an option to take a module in a related or completely different subject; moreover, it may be possible to link mathematics with another academic field in the optional Year 3 project. In Year 1 and the first semester of Year 2 you will study core material that will underpin the remainder of your studies: calculus, algebra, probability, and analysis. You will also see how mathematical models are constructed and analysed, especially those based on differential equations, and how mathematicians bring precision to the study of uncertainty. Furthermore, there is instruction in computer algebra systems (CAS) and in techniques for solving problems numerically. Starting in Year 2 and emphatically in Year 3, having acquired a grounding in core areas of mathematics, you are free to design either a wide-ranging or a more focused programme, depending on your personal interests. This course is accredited by Mathematics with Integrated Master’s (MMath) UCAS code: G103 Duration: 4 years Degree awarded: MMath Mathematics The MMath programme is designed for students who are both dedicated to mathematics and wish to deepen their study beyond the bounds of a three-year degree. The programme gives students the opportunity to develop specialist subject knowledge and skills that will allow them to embark upon postgraduate study in mathematics or a career in a quantitative discipline. The content and structure of the first three years of the MMath programme are identical to those of the single honours Mathematics programme. In Year 4, you will have the opportunity to focus exclusively on the topics that interest you the most. You will study a small number of topics, based directly on the research interests of members of the department. You will also complete a research project under the supervision of a member of staff, giving you first-hand experience of their particular specialism. You will learn how to work independently, engage with relevant research literature, and write mathematics to a professional standard. Single Honours Mathematics students who have demonstrated a particular aptitude for the subject may be allowed to transfer to the MMath programme by the end of their second year.
