Why study this course?
Studying English Literature at Keele offers you the opportunity to develop your imaginative
and critical skills. You will encounter exciting new ways of engaging with literature in English
from the Renaissance period to the modern day.
At Keele, you’ll explore the significance of texts within their originating
cultures and historical periods and explore a range of approaches to literary
study. You’ll consider the historical, socio-political, economic, gender and
geographical contexts of fiction, poetry and drama from the Renaissance
period to the present day.
You might explore the American literary tradition, links between literature
and film, or engage with exciting new genres such as the graphic novel.
You’ll become an imaginative and critical thinker as you explore subjects
such as the importance of story, the novel, writing for the screen,
post-colonialism, modernism and the postmodern.
What will this mean for my future?
Study English Literature at Keele and you'll graduate with a wide range
of skills including in research, oral and written communication, and
presentation, as well as excellent opportunities for the future. Some
careers may require further study or training, but you might work as a
teacher, journalist, editor, librarian, advertising copywriter, solicitor, arts
administrator or writer. You could go into marketing, research, broadcasting,
publishing, the compiling of dictionaries, or teaching English as a foreign
language.
If you are thinking of travelling the world after graduation, teaching or
working abroad, Keele’s Language Centre offers a variety of language
courses. You may graduate with an enhanced degree with foreign language
competency or an internationally recognised qualification in Teaching
