Dr Melissa Bowerman has received a prestigious grant to change the lives of children with a devastating medical condition .
Dr Roberto Galizi and colleagues have developed a novel technology which allows them to control populations of mosquitoes
Professor Carolyn Chew-Graham has been working with colleagues at Cambridge and Manchester to raise awareness of a rare type of heart failure , in a bid to improve treatment outcomes for patients .
Dr Xuebing Cao
Dr Xuebing Cao is leading new research investigating the impact that Covid-19 has had on fair working opportunities in the Midlands , and how this can be addressed post-pandemic . The study is exploring how the Covid-19 crisis has exposed gaps in the provision of fair working opportunities in the Midlands , and will provide recommendations to government departments , organisations and community groups to increase the provision of ‘ decent work ’ for individuals across the region – access to work that is productive , delivers a fair income , ensures security in the workplace , and provides social protection for families .
Professor Christine Roffe
Professor Christine Roffe is leading a research team which has secured £ 2.2m of funding to investigate whether a common anti-sickness drug could be repurposed to prevent pneumonia and reduce the risk of premature deaths in stroke patients . The five-year study will assess whether the drug metoclopramide is an effective treatment option for stroke patients , who are more susceptible to pneumonia , in a bid to improve patient outcomes after having a stroke .
A study led by Keele researchers could save the NHS up to £ 45m over three years by increasing the number of kidney dialysis patients whose treatment takes place at home . Led by Professor Simon Davies , alongside Professor Lisa Dikomitis , Dr Ivonne Solis-Trapala and Dr Mark Lambie , the ongoing research aims to change the uptake and availability of home dialysis treatments , by assessing the main factors affecting home dialysis availability , which will allow the researchers to develop a practical and feasible approach for dialysis centres to make these treatments more accessible .
Dr Melissa Bowerman
Dr Melissa Bowerman has received a prestigious grant to change the lives of children with a devastating medical condition . The funding she has received from the Academy of Medical Science ’ s Springboard grant scheme will allow her to continue her research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy – the most common neuromuscular disorder leading to infant mortality which is caused by the loss of function of the survival motor neuron ( SMN ) gene , which leads to the death of nerve and muscle cells . The study will evaluate the potential of three commercially available drug candidates with the aim of repurposing them to provide affordable treatments that can complement existing therapies .
