Work Shadowing,
Interview Skills and
Assessment Centres
Keele Careers Advisor, Karen Coney, explains how the opportunities
offered by RBS have benefitted KMS students.
Demand for the work shadowing experience was high and
all the available spaces were filled very quickly. Economics
and Geography student Craig Wing went on the first visit
and told us: “The shadowing was very interesting; learning
more about the FX market was excellent as I was able to
get some real life application of the theory I have been
learning in lectures. Each individual station we visited gave
a good insight into the whole streamlined process and the
people delivering the shadowing were brilliant at explaining
their roles.”
Business Management students studying the new Practice
of Professional Management module gained an insight into
the requirements of the graduate recruitment process
when senior members of the Foreign Exchange and Money
Markets Team from RBS delivered an Interview Skills and
Assessment Tips day.
Their recent experience of recruiting graduates for the
bank ensured they delivered a valuable session sharing
their advice on how to succeed at interview and in
assessment centres. Students had the opportunity to
observe good and bad practice at interview and gain key
insights on how successful candidates are selected. Students
were also shown the evaluation criteria used by RBS to
enable them to gain an understanding of what constitutes
an effective answer.
Students then participated in an assessment centre group
activity whilst the visitors observed how they performed.
Helpful feedback was given to the students on what
recruiters are looking for and what to avoid in order to
be successful.
Students appreciated the opportunity to learn from an
employer, stating:
RBS were excellent. I really enjoyed the
RBS interviews and assessment centre day.
It was insightful and enjoyable. I learnt many
new skills. It enabled me to learn new skills that
I will use in the future and also to find out about
other opportunities that are out there.
