Keeping it Keele 014
There are many reasons for
deciding to study at postgraduate
level. It could be a personal
interest in your subject, a general
love of learning or a variety of
career-related reasons. Whatever
the reason for choosing to study
at Masters lev el, the next big
decision is where to study and for
some Keele Management School
students, the answer is to stay
with, or return to, Keele.
One such student is Huzaima
Rahim who is currently studying for
an MA in Management following
her undergraduate degree in
Human Resource Management
and Business Management. She
explains her reasons for choosing
to return to KMS.
“The obvious reason for starting
postgraduate study is employability;
we often hear that having further
degrees opens new doors and
prospects and this is a very common
reason to decide on postgraduate
studies. For me, the decision to
undertake the MA Management
was a mixture of factors.
“After my first degree at KMS,
I took a year off to have a taste of
the working world and to put into
practice the things I had learned.
I worked for three months in an
agricultural reforms bank and this
convinced me that I would need
to specialise in either HRM or
Management. Having decided to
return to further study the next
decision was where, although
I knew it would be in the UK
because it feels like a second
home to me now.
“After a lot of thought I decided
that I should return to Keele. The
foremost reason for this decision
was that the MA Management here
most suited my requirements. The
way the course is structured and
delivered is ideal for me as I want
a degree which not only gives me
the academic perspective, but also
the essential skills required for the
daunting job market. The tutors and
all the staff in Keele Management
School are so co-operative that, as
an international student, I settled
in without any hassle. I knew it
would be like this because of the
experience of my first degree at
Keele Management School.
“As I come towards the end of my
degree, I look back and think it is
one of the best decisions I have
ever made. In spite of the fact I
had obstacles in my way to return
to university, I mustered up all my
courage and did not give up. I still
remember my first day at Keele
four years ago when I read on the
prospectus the views of a student:
‘once you spend a day in Keele
you never want to leave it’ and I
could not understand this then,
but today I think Keele University
is the biggest motivating factor
in my decision to go on to higher
education. If I ever get a chance to
do a PhD in the future, Keele will be
the place I’ll choose. Because for me,
Keele – forever!” Huzaima Rahim
