OUTREACH DAY 2014 ISAAC NURSE & TYLER COVE JUSTICE IRIS JULIA CURTIS & SOPHIE PARK MATT ZHAO, BOB ZHENG, JOE ZHOU Outreach Day 2014 BY REMY GUENIN, ‘86 MAY 7, 2014 OUTREACH DAY turned out to be a day of fulfilment for Kingsway College’s Motto “Service Not Fame.” Without any fanfare or media attention, the student body of Kingsway College was moved to action. The day began around 8:30am with a short worship thought from our student Minister of Service and Outreach, Jessica Laan. This was followed by Nancy Cleghorne, our Outreach Day coordinator and school nurse, giving the group instructions for the day. Nancy worked throughout the entire school year to prepare for this special event and it takes a tremendous amount of planning to have a day such as this. Over 180 students participated in this coordinated effort to make a positive impact on the community and many organizations benefited from their work. The students were divided into groups and sent out to various locations throughout the Durham Region and beyond. One group travelled as far as Peterborough, Ontario to provide service at the Kawartha Food Pantry. Several other groups went out to help with various tasks at the Kawartha Food Bank, Bowmanville Zoo, Durham Deaf Services, St. Vincent’s Food Kitchen, New Life SDA Church Pantry, 10 KC Contact Fall 2014 MR. CHRIS MORTENSON Feed the Need Oshawa, the Adventist Book Center, the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Canada (SDACC), College Park Flowers, the Kingsway College Campus and many others. Many of our international students genuinely enjoyed the day and commented on how they looked forward to doing it again next year. When students have a chance to serve, the God given desire of service is evident in their smiles and the enthusiasm they put into their work. There are so many opportunities to serve in the community and make a difference in the name of Jesus Christ. Once the work was done, all the students travelled back to campus for a much deserved meal in the cafeteria. After everyone had eaten, there were some field games followed by an ice cream feast sponsored by the Student Association. Kingsway College students benefit from the opportunity to serve. When we share our energy, talents and time with others, we are brought closer to each other, to the community and ultimately to God.
