“We need clean water. We need economic development,” she told me.
For urban communities facing budget cuts, natural disasters, or man-made disasters like
the kind Flint experienced, clean water and economic development are not a given.
That’s why Flint Mayor, Dr. Karen Weaver wrote an open letter to San Juan, Puerto
Rico Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz in support of her cries for help which did not arrive fast
enough after Hurricane Maria.
“I believe that President Trump has no idea what an austerity budget means,” said
Weaver in a written statement. “It is nearly impossible to help ourselves when the core
infrastructure is in disarray and there is a severe lack of adequate resources to resolve
the immediate life-impacting issues.”
