What a pleasure to continue to present our newsletter Kanguq! Gathering the articles for our issues
has and continues to be an incredible source of
learning about our cooperative movement. Since I
began working for Ilagiisaq I have learned so much
about its importance, especially to those who, like
Bobby Snowball of Kuujjuaq, laboured, travelled,
were taught, and who in turn taught fellow Inuit
about how cooperatives work. In this issue we will
hear in Mr. Snowball’s words how the Kuujjuaq Cooperative was begun and how he became involved.
We also continue to learn about the history of our
cooperative movement from Peter Murdoch, former
General Manager of Ilagiisaq and friend to the
Inuit. In this issue, I am proud to show how he was
recognized for his life’s work by being awarded the
Order of Canada.
Sadly, former President Eli Elijassiapik suddenly
passed away in March. We publish an article here in
his memory and dedicate this issue to him and his
family. Though his loss is mourned we take pride
in the fact that he too had received recognition for
his life’s work. He and General Manager Heng Kun
received the Order of Merit that you can learn more
of in this issue.
I see the cooperative movement as a way in
which community wellbeing can be developed and
improved. There is much cooperation to be done in
order to create a healthy environment for our families and our communities. As part of an initiative
to promote healthy living, Kanguq has produced an
interview-based article by Maata Amarualik of Puvirnituq, who shares her experience with diabetes.
Be sure to read her article!
In the last issue we introduced a new section
to show off an age-old Inuit recipe, and we will
continue to produce recipes that you can enjoy with
country food.
