When I first became involved in organising the Diversity Festival at Keele, originally proposed as the International Festival, last semester, I could never have predicted what it would go on to become. What began as a simple idea soon evolved into a shared vision, bringing together people from across the University who believed in celebrating the culture and international character that strengthen our unique community.
As the project developed, it became clear that delivering something of that magnitude required far more than enthusiasm and ideas. It depended on collaboration, communication, and the willingness of people from across the institution to work together towards a common goal. Colleagues from different departments and professional services, student groups, societies, clubs, unions, staff, and senior leaders all contributed their time, expertise, and energy.
In many ways, Diversity Festival became a demonstration of what can be achieved when a university moves forward as a united front.
One of the most rewarding aspects of coordinating the festival was witnessing the relationships that formed along the way.
Bringing together diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise highlighted the strength that comes from collective effort.
It also reinforced a key leadership lesson: meaningful change is rarely achieved by individuals acting alone; rather, it emerges when people are empowered to contribute, collaborate, and take ownership of a shared vision. The Diversity Festival ultimately became one of the most successful events of its kind at Keele, and its success belongs to everyone who helped shape and deliver it.
