10. Offer to help Family As people age, it is often difficult for them to begin asking for help when they need it after being independent for so long. Parents busy raising their own kids may forget the plight of their own parents, assuming that they are fine to take care of things on their own.
7. Contribute to Food Hampers Most grocery stores have a bin at the exit of the store for non perishable food items. Next time your grocery shopping, try picking out an item or two to donate on your way out. The soup kitchens and Food banks rely heavily on the community’ s support, you can do your part for others by sharing meal supplies!
8. Donate clothes to thrift stores Many people including the homeless, low income individuals and struggling students typically can’ t afford to purchase new clothes from expensive mall stores, so they depend on finding great items at local thrift stores. These stores sell gently used clothing for a much more reasonable price. By donating clothing to them, you are helping provide quality finds to those that need it.
11. Visit a Senior Center Many residents in senior centres are in need of conversation and connection with people from outside of the centre. Often times, their families and friends are far away, unavailable or no longer with us. Visiting a home for an hour or two every so often can make a huge difference in the attitude and outlook of the residents. Not to mention, they are full of old wisdom and tales from a life long before you were born!
12. Serve Meals at a local soup kitchen Often, we overlook the hunger issues that exist all around us. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve food to those less fortunate to have healthy, warm meals at home. Connect with your local soup kitchen to find out ways you can help contribute to the wellbeing of those using these great services.
9. Become a“ Big Brother or Big Sister” Many communities have a Big Brother, Big Sister service that provide young kids with an older buddy and older kids with a younger buddy. It is a great way to connect kids with a great role model and support.
