CREATIVITY ISN’ T CONSISTENT
One of the funny things about being a creative online is that people- our followers and potential customers- expect consistency, but in actuality creativity is anything but.
And I don’ t just mean consistency in posting regularly and appealing to the almighty but vague-in-how-it-works algorithm( which I’ m admittedly terrible). I mean consistency in branding, style and‘ finding your niche’. The online world rewards recognisable creatives. Same brand colours, same cake style, the same type of cake over and over again.
But creativity doesn’ t always work like that. Or at least mine doesn’ t.
In some ways, we can unintentionally force ourselves into a creative box we no longer fit into.“ Oh I can’ t post vintage Lambeth cakes, because I’ m known for fondant work”, even if that’ s what genuinely excites you. Staying where people expect us to feels safer, especially when it’ s what people already respond to.
Over the span of 12 years( I better fact check this, ha!), I’ ve changed creative direction more times than I can count. What started as miniature cupcake art evolved into celebration cakes and a complete business rebrand. From there, I trialled different styles before eventually falling into the world of realistic food cakes. From the outside, I sometimes wonder if that evolution looks inspiring … or just confusing.
