I had a conversation recently with a friend.
To protect his identity, let’s call him Ferdie.
The first words out of his mouth were
something like the following. “Mike, Barrack
Obama turns my stomach. I can’t help it. Every
time I see him, my blood
pressure shoots up a
hundred points. I just want
to knock the c*@p out of
him. I hate him and
everything he stands for.”
I said, “Ferdie, despite
your anger, try calling him
President Obama and try
seeing Jesus in him.”
Ferdie responded: “Jesus
ain’t there. Jesus wouldn’t sink that low. And,
Barrack Hussein doesn’t deserve to be called
president.” I said: “Jesus tells us there is a
spark of God in all of us. He’s present in
everyone, including those we despise. And,
Ferdie, a majority of our countrymen gave
Barrack Obama the title of president. Twice!
Honor the office, even if you despise the man.”
Then, Ferdie said, “Mike, get off your religious
high horse. If Jesus were with us right now, he’d
agree with me.” I said, “Ferdie, go read Matthew
5:43-48. Jesus tells us to love our enemies. He
tells us to pray for them, not curse them. You can
oppose the president’s policies and you certainly
aren’t required to like him, but
Jesus insists that you LOVE him.”
I, then, told Ferdie a story I told
during a recent children’s Mass.
Here it is, with a slight adult twist.
Princess Dulcinea lived in the
Enchanted Forest. She lived in a
castle. It was thirty stories high
and made of crystal. In the
afternoon sun, it shone like a 300
-foot diamond.
The king and queen, Dulcinea’s dad and
mom, gave her three floors of the castle for her
private use. Dulcinea’s bed frame was made of
solid 24-carat gold. She had a 2,000 square foot
toy room. Her separate play room exceeded
2,500 square feet. Her closet contained 1,000
dresses.
