June 2018 SPECIAL EDITION August 2017 | Page 5

August 2017 Reflect on the sins you have committed. There are many internet sources to guide you, and even some free apps. Bring a list if you need to. Make the Sign of the Cross (praying the words out loud), and continue by saying, “Bless me, Father, I have sinned. It has been ____ (days/months/years) since my last confession. These are my sins.” Tell the priest the sins that you have committed. If you’re not sure if something is a sin, just ask the priest. He will offer advice. The priest will give you a penance, such as something to do, or prayers to pray, as a response to God’s mercy. Pray the Act of Contrition, demonstrating your sorrow for your sins. This must be prayed out loud for the priest to hear. Bring a copy with you if needed. The priest will extend his hands in your direction and pray the Prayer of Absolution, absolving you from your sins. Try to do your penance immediately, or as soon as possible. Try to commit to receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis. - 5 -
