Frank Serio , Special Needs Fridays during my residency in Charleston , WV , and Thursdays serving school children at The Children ’ s Dental Clinic since 1994 , in addition to Give Kids A Smile .
Since our inaugural GKAS event in 2003 , our local program has expanded to three events annually , serving wonderful , indigent children in our community . Our efforts have been honored at the ADA GKAS Gala and contributed to the ADA GKAS Advisory Board . A lot of collaboration and energy is needed – selecting and advertising treatment dates , applying for dental supplies from the ADA Foundation , soliciting donations to cover transportation and oral hygiene supplies , identifying kids in need , finding venues and volunteers - to provide care during events as well as follow-up care after events . The reward – knowing you ’ ve impacted kids ’ overall health through dental education and treatment is priceless !
Because of our commitment to improving the quality of children ’ s health , we ’ ve had the opportunity to network with new dentists hoping to be more involved in organized dentistry , like Drs . Selena Nguyen and Kelsey Dagenhart ; had the honor of collaborating with Second District leaders including Drs . Elliott Maser , Bruce Terry , and Hadi Ghazzhouli ; and fostered friendships in Chester-Delaware , including a special core of dentists who have made numerous donations over the years – Drs . Sandra Behnam , Sam Cimino , Sandi Grzybicki , Joyce Koshetar , Richard Nelson , Rich Pfeiffer , Michael Russo and Susan Scharlock , and / or volunteered for countless events like Drs . Stephanie McGann and Neal Neuman .
I ’ m thankful for our network of specialists who answer our calls to graciously provide pro bono care in their offices without hesitation – for care that can ’ t be provided during our annual events . Thank you , Precision Endodontic Network , Dr . Dick Clark , Oral Surgery Associates of the Main Line , Dr . Joel Funari , Chester County Oral Surgery , Dr . Keith Silverstein , Dr . Connie Greeley , Dr . Ray Buttenbaum , and Drs . Stu & Trish Gutsche !
Hosts for our annual events have been Community Volunteers in Medicine in West Chester , Dr . Barry Cohen in Drexel Hill , and Dr . Theresa Devine in Broomall - for the past two decades ! Area school district hygienists , nurses , and social workers have also been part of our team . Many in this group have received our annual Give Kids A Smile Champion Award !
I would like to give special thanks to four dentists who have been involved in every GKAS event since 2003 – Drs . Tami Brady , Karin Brian , Linda Himmelberger , and Ron Heier .
I ’ m grateful to my family for their constant support of my passion to serve !
Again – thank you ; hope to see you all at MOM-n-PA in Reading !
