On the 6-month reassessment, there was no
improvement, so all options were looked at, including
breeding her. We decided to try embryo transfer to
save the pressure on Sunny’s leg, but that wasn’t to be
with the recipient mare not maintaining the transfer
past 25 days. In February 2020, a subtle increase
in lameness was noticed, with a scan of the DDFT
revealing deterioration. The Vets worked very hard to
try to influence a recovery.
While an inpatient, rationing was needed, as Sunny’s
special ways had everyone sneaking in the liquorice
and carrot treats that Rachel would leave for her. Sadly,
Sunny became a medical anomaly with her condition
continually deteriorating. Despite the very best of care
she was receiving, the time had unfortunately come
to do what was best for Sunny. She was euthanised
on the 1st of April and brought home to rest on a hill
overlooking Lake Tyrrell.
Little had the Elliotts known, that at Sunny’s last
show, after placing 3rd in the Amateur Senior Trail,
with Rachel, and 4th in the Select Trail, with Carol,
that it would be Carol’s last ride on her.

With wonderful memories of this mare’s illustrious
show career, Sheza Good Design Q-73136 and
Rachel’s class to be beaten in was Hunt Seat Equitation.
Sunny was instrumental in Rachel achieving Hi-Point
Amateur of Australia in 2017 and 2019, and Runnerup
in 2016 and 2018. Sunny amassed almost 1500
points in her show career, earning Bronze Centuries in
Trail, Halter, Showmanship, Western Horsemanship
and Hunt Seat Equitation.
