Rehoming The Rescued Dog
Many rescue dogs have not had an ideal start to life . Many have spent time in shelters or moved around from home to home . They have not had their needs met . As a result , the dog you bring home may be extremely stressed and anxious . Signs of stress include panting , shaking , lack of appetite , unwillingness to take a treat , being unable to get their attention , salivation , yawning , licking lips , “ whale eyes ,” hyperactivity , growling , aggression , and attempting to run away or hide .
Don ’ t give up . It is widely accepted that a dog takes a minimum of 3 weeks to acclimate to a new home . In that time , their environment should be safe and predictable . By controlling the environment and limiting exposure to outside stressors , you give them time to get accustomed to a new life in a safe , slow way . They need that time to get to know the home and the relationships that exist , “ pack-order ” if you will . He will begin to turn to the “ pack ” for guidance on how to obtain resources , like food , safety , comfort , exercise , and belonging .
Here are a few suggestions for introducing your dog to your home :
Have a crate set up in a room by itself . The first thing you do when you bring the dog home is show him where to potty and introduce the crate . The crate is a safe place , like a den , for the dog to decompress . During the acclimation , if the dog is not in the crate , he should be with you . Some find putting their dog on a leash and tethering it to their belt a good option . In this way , you can control the behavior and correct misbehavior before bad habits are formed . You are also establishing a relationship of trust to build training upon . When the dog is out of the crate , work on training . Take walks , work on sit down , come , leave it , stay , wait . After about 90 minutes or so , return the dog to the crate so he can process what he has learned .
Resist the urge to spoil your dog and dote on him until he has earned it . Let him come to you instead of forcing affection on him . If you have another dog , wait until the first 3 weeks have passed to introduce them . Think of this acclimation period as a way of creating a new beginning for your dog . If done properly , it will establish you as a safe , confident leader and lower the stress level at his own pace . It ’ s one of the best things you can do to ensure your friend ’ s future well-being .
