" Should I shave my double-coated dog in the summer months ?"
Answer : Double coats , also known as down hair , ground hairs , or undercoat , are the very fine , fluffy hairs closest to the skin on some dogs . Some dog breeds that have undercoats include the German Shepherd , Pomeranians , Chows , Huskies , Malamutes , and Samoyeds . The hairs are short and crimped , which make them highly efficient at trapping air and insulating the animal , keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer . There is a myth about long-haired , double-coated dogs needing to be shaved in order to be cooler during the summer . Double-coated dogs are dogs that have a heavy undercoat . The lighter , softer coat that sheds naturally does not need shaving . Unless the dog has passed the point of no return in the matting department , the best type of grooming for these dogs is a vigorous undercoat raking with a special tool that helps remove the undercoat . This raking , followed by a warm bath and a blow dry , will help separate the hair so the groomer can get the rest of the undercoat . Once the undercoat has been thinned out , the dog does feel cooler . The guard hairs on the top which do not shed out provide protection against the sun ' s rays , and actually insulate the dog from the heat . If mats are a concern , have your dog professionally groomed by a groomer that specializes in these breeds . Another myth is that cutting a dog ' s hair off will cause the dog not to shed . This is not necessarily true . Dogs with undercoats shed . After a cut , it may shed shorter hair , but it will still shed . Also , clipping down these breeds sometimes damages the coat , and the older the dog is , the less likely the dog ' s guard hairs will re-grow . This gives the dog a patchy , scruffy , frizzy appearance , and the UV rays can damage the skin . This is painful and can take a long time to heal . So let ' s keep our furry pets safe from the summer heat , and if in doubt , talk to a professional about how to groom your double-coated dog .
