Klostermann Appointed
Public Works Director
City Manager Mike Van Milligen has appointed Street and Sewer Maintenance Supervisor John Klostermann as Dubuque’s
next public works director, effective May
2, 2016. Klostermann will replace Public
Works Director Don Vogt who will retire on April 29, 2016, after more than
40 years with the City of Dubuque. The
public is invited to
attend a retirement
reception for Vogt on
Wednesday, May 11,
from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
on the second floor of
the Grand River Center, 500 Bell Street. A
program will be held
at 6:00 p.m.
Klostermann joined
the City of Dubuque
in 1975. He has held a series of positions
with progressively more responsibilities:
street department laborer (1975-1980),
street maintenance worker (1980-1983),
street maintenance foreman (1983-1990),
and street maintenance supervisor (19901994). He has served as the City’s street
and sewer maintenance supervisor since
1994.
Klostermann’s current responsibilities as
street and sewer maintenance supervisor include: planning and operation of
riverfront maintenance, street and traffic
lighting, street maintenance, snow and ice
control, sanitary sewer maintenance, storm
sewer maintenance, flood control, and
Port of Dubuque maintenance. He is also
responsible for the development of operating and capital improvement budgets for
those activities, equipment replacement
schedules, the annual street and sewer
maintenance programs, flood control operations, and maintenance plans for the
John C. Culver Flood Control System. As
public works director, Klostermann will be
responsible for oversight of these activities
and refuse collection and recycling, landfill
operations, and the municipal garage.
Mines of Spain Park Ranger Retiring with 38 Years of Service
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Park Ranger Wayne Buchholtz will retire on May
24, after 38 years with the State. The public is welcome to attend a retirement reception for
Buchholtz on Saturday, May 14, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the EB
Lyons Center at the Mines of Spain, 8991 Bellevue Heights Rd. A short presentation will be given at 2:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
Buchholtz has been park ranger in Dubuque for the last 24 years. He has received the Governor’s Excellence Award, was the Conservationist of the Year
and Employee of the Year in Iowa State Parks, and received the Outstanding
DNR Staff Award. He is also a Certified Interpretive Guide.
Buchholtz has had a pioneering role in the Friends of the Mines of Spain, helping
them receive the Governors Volunteer Award, NAI Award Region 5, NAI Award
National Conference, Golden Silo Award Silos and Smokestacks, and many
others. He has contributed to the park working on several projects including:
repaired, improved, and created several trails and bridges, addition of a canoe
launch, water trail, many interpretive programs, and exhibits for the Mines of Spain.
