their mothers, I salute you. Flowers, breakfast in bed, brunch, chocolates, or a simple “I
love you” are all appreciated, not to mention
a stiff martini.
Beginning last month, I included a poem
in my article. In past years, Julien’s Journal
included a literary section every month,
featuring poems and short stories, but
because of space, we now only do so in our
December issue. Readers have mentioned
that they missed this section, so now I will
try to include one poem or short story every
month. This month, a young author who’s
brother, Joe, co-wrote last month’s nature
article, “Joe’s Adventures in Dubuque,” submitted a short poem to share. It is dedicated
to Memorial Day. Thank you, Sam.
Gertrude Rhoades
1881-1884
There once was a girl
She died at age three.
She died in her bed
Sleeping you see.
Her name was Gertrude.
She died long ago 132 years or so.
Each night she put her shoes on a chair
So that in the morning
They still would be there.
Her parents were sad
As sad as can be.
They buried her in Linwood Cemetery.
On top of her grave
They put a stone chair
Along with her shoes
She never would wear.
