REFLECTIONS OF TEACHERS LEARNING ABOUT THE CURRICULUM
Rubina, a 2017 trainee, wrote“ Interestingly I was not aware about the National Curriculum. This training gave a new picture that there is an important document which is called Curriculum and it has specific learning standards grade wise and level wise.”
Zahid Karim, a science teacher, wrote“ Once I saw this document in a training session, but I was not aware what is inside in this document. Now I became aware about the competencies, standards, benchmarks and SLOs. The new learning will help me to refine and develop an effective lesson plan.”
Saat Bibi teaches in the remote Ishkoman Valley. After attending the CAI-G training she wrote in her reflection“ I am very sad and happy both sad for the blind teaching without following the national curriculum. It is not my fault I think because I haven’ t any idea and information about this important document. I am happy for the new knowledge and learning. After this training I am now able to use the National Curriculum in my Classroom Teaching.”
Akram Ali is teaching in the Broghil Valley( Lashkar Goze) of Chitral KPK last boarder of Pakistan. He writes,“ I did not know about the Curriculum. I think I was a blind teacher and this training gave me a light. I believe teaching without curriculum is sin.”
ROLE OF TEACHERS AND TEACHER-TRAINING PROGRAMS IN SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION
Teachers are the key players who implement the curriculum at the classroom level. Unfortunately, in third-world countries like Pakistan consultants and educational experts develop the national curriculum, but the practitioners( teachers) are not part of the whole process. Therefore, when it comes to implementation teachers face difficulties. They don’ t have any idea about the curriculum and there are no trainings for teachers that help them to understand this important document. Due to this, the curriculum got put on a shelf rather than put into practice in the classroom. For the present curriculum to be implemented successfully, it is important that both pre-service and in-service teacher training programs should aim at familiarizing the teachers with the new curriculum, and training them for its implementation at the classroom level. Yet there are no such government training programs.
Seeing the dire need for teacher training programs on the curriculum, Central Asia Institute Gilgit designed the 2017 summer training focusing specifically on the national curriculum. The training focused on competencies, standards, benchmarks, and standard learning outcomes( SLOs) for each class grade. This training program was an introductory orientation for teachers. After this training the teachers could understand the curriculum, which will help them to prepare their lesson plans and give them a direction for effective teaching.
Teachers look forward to implementing what they have learned during these trainings. CAI Gilgit will continue to assess the need for programs like this and hope to offer additional sessions in the future. •
