Arts advocates and politicians/policymakers are slowly finding common ground and mutual
interests as more and more writing, research, and study on the importance of establishing secure arts
programs in public schools emerges. Topics are diverse, underscoring the widespread impact that
effective arts programs affect. Examples of this kind of educational range can be seen in the titles of
these relatively contemporary publications: Understanding Students with Autism through Art (Gerber &
Kellman, Eds., 2010), Reaching and Teaching Students with Special Needs through Art (Gerber & Guay,
Eds., 2006), Artful Teaching: Integrating the Arts for Understanding Across the Curriculum, K-8 (Donahue &
Stuart, Eds., 2008), and Why Our Schools Need the Arts (Davis, 2008). The ideal of not justifying arts
education because of how well it can serve other subjects is still a work in progress as evidenced in the
