Chapter 4 Learning Beyond the Classroom

Lasallian Leadership Training Camp

Packed, prepared and ready for the activity
The theme for LLTC this year was“ Spot, light”. When it comes to leadership, there can be a misconception that we are in the spotlight; we are the centre of the role. Through LLTC, we hoped to urge potential leaders to step out of the spotlight and to see things from a different perspective; ultimately becoming a servant leader. After going through the service learning experience, we hoped to offer another interpretation to the word: to“ Spot, light.” which was for the participants to proactively reach out to those in need and be a light to them which can only be accomplished when they take a time to pause and empathise.
The camp was carried out from 2 – 5 June and included participants from various CCA groups and also student leaders from St Patrick’ s School. The highlight of the camp was“ Journey”, the service learning component where after a hiatus of 6 years, students collaborated with Silver Homes to engage the elderly living in rental flats in Chinatown.

Leading through service to the community
Participants were actively involved in painting and cleaning the houses of the elderly as well as engaging them in conversation. Though the work was challenging, the participants took on the tasks with enthusiasm and determination. It was truly a step out of their comfort zone for many of the participants.
To consolidate the experience over the two days, speakers from the different community groups were invited to conduct a panel discussion with the participants.
To conclude the camp, participants were introduced to Polarity Thinking by Ms Cherie Tseng( SJI parent, COO of Secur Solutions and commentator / open writer for CNA), which was a framework to help them leverage the benefits of opposing ideas to maximise outcomes. During the workshop, facilitators helped the participants identify contrasting polarities in various aspects of school life which could help them acquire leadership dispositions.
