Party ! Celebrating after another year of partnership kidsRead
As the kidsREAD partnership between SJI and Bendemeer Primary School entered its third year , the National Library Board ’ s ( NLB ) nationwide reading programme for young Singaporeans from less privileged backgrounds received an even more enthusiastic response from Josephians . This year , another 30 passionate SJI volunteers were recruited , the biggest number thus far . Both the outgoing ( pioneer ) and incoming EXCO members also led the CAS capably .
On Wednesday afternoons , volunteers travelled to Bendemeer Primary School to run the NLB-curated programme for Primary 1 and Primary 2 students . Each session comprised a storyreading segment , followed by book-related STEAM ( science , technology , engineering , art , mathematics ) activities facilitated by the volunteers to reinforce the story that was read to the students . Finally , the students enjoyed some individual reading time . Before each session , kidsREAD volunteers looked through the resources provided by NLB to prepare for the story-reading and facilitation of activities .
As the volunteers returned each week to mentor their younger buddies , a strong rapport was established with them , who in turn looked up to these big brothers and sisters and appreciated their guidance . The year-long programme culminated with a mini-party , as students and volunteers alike came together to celebrate the stronger interest in reading as well as the bonds formed .
Demonstrating unwavering dedication , the volunteers have continued to impress with their ability to guide their young charges patiently and the positive impact made on the young beneficiaries . Indeed , the Josephian volunteers have grown as Men and Women for Others .
