Pre-University Seminar

TEACHER-IN-CHARGE Dr Ng Soo Nee ( Teacher I / C )
The Pre-University Seminar 2024 is a conference dedicated to fostering dialogues between youths on Singapore ’ s development , national identity and values , and how these variables are shaped by the ever-changing geopolitical landscape . Hosted by Dunman High School , the seminar gave students from SJI the opportunity to deepen their understanding of national issues and ideate policies to resolve them .
The seminar consisted of a 4D3N residential stay in the National University of Singapore . The Opening Address was delivered by Mr Desmond Lee , the Minister of National Development , where he spoke about the importance of engaging youth in issues of national concern , as well as the significance of the theme this year , ‘ Forging Our Way Forward ’. The seminar placed a key focus on the importance of sustained and effectual progress in our nation ’ s development in various aspects . Following this address , the seminar included a series of programmes , such as dialogues with experts from the private and public sector , as well as learning journeys .
Amidst the wide range of programmes planned , one key aspect that struck the students was the sharing by Professor Elvin Lim , who shared insights on the increasing necessity to develop the skill of thoughtful questioning . In an age where resources and information are abundant , the main priority students were encouraged to develop was how to ask the best questions , as opposed to having the answers . The seminar culminated in a showcase of students ’ proposed solutions to national challenges , as well as a closing address by Mr Chan Chun Sing , the Minister for Education , who shared the importance of staying relevant and competitive in preparation for an increasingly volatile global climate .
Through this experience , students were able to gain a deeper understanding into the prevailing contexts in Singapore through self-directed research and engagement with industry experts . The seminar provided a platform for students of diverse backgrounds to share their perspectives and propose solutions which pave the way for the strengthening of our social compact in the future .
