Lasallian Distinguished Service Award

Julian Teng ( MN403 )
Julian Teng is a servant leader who shows a strong sense of selfless service to the SJI community . He leads by example and has always placed others before his own needs . His dependable nature makes him an excellent role model . He has gone out of his way to serve the school community with pride and dedication . As an executive committee member of the Prefectorial Board , he has made a positive difference to SJI with his steadfastness .
Throughout his four years in Scouts , Julian was an active participant in a range of activities such as the annual Jobweek , World Scouts Scarf Day in 2018 , Campfires , Istana Open House and the Year 1 Orientation Programme . In recognition of his exceptional character true to the Lasallian ethos , he was awarded the Lasallian Scout Award in 2016 . He was elected Senior Patrol Leader in 2018 and was involved in planning and executing many Scouts events within and outside SJI . These included service projects with local organisations such as the Morning Star Student Care @ SJI Junior . Julian ’ s call to serve extended beyond the shores of Singapore . In his third year in SJI , he was part of the Singapore contingent at the 11th National Taiwan Jamboree . Mr Andrew Martin , teacher-in-charge of Scouts states , “ Julian is a true example of a Lasallian . There have been many instances while he was helping out during Scouts or school based events where his thoughts , words and actions have been centred on looking out for those around him . He has taught me , his teacher , to truly put into action the values and teachings of our Founder . Julian has always been a person of kind thoughts , kind words and kind deeds .”
Julian ’ s passion and enthusiasm for the English Language motivates him to excel and to go on a quest of selfdiscovery . His literary competency was recognised as early as Year 1 when he won the Queen ’ s Commonwealth Essay Competition . In 2016 , he was awarded the Goh Sin Tub Literary Award and the C . C Tan Scholarship in SJI . Last year , Julian was put in charge as publicity manager at the Singa- Lit Festival in SJI . He was also selected for the Josephian Elective English Programme ( JEEP ) where he was given the opportunity to develop his literary portfolio . In addition , he collaborated with Discovery Channel to build on their social media presence . He also developed a Harvard Online Module on the History of Literature . As a participant of the Lived Experiences Elective Programme ( LEEP ), an inhouse English Language Programme that allows students to appreciate the importance of applied learning in the field of Language and Literature , he volunteered at the National Library Board in their Read ! Fest activity to encourage reading among young Singaporeans . Mr Karthickeyen Govindaraj , his
English teacher states , “ Julian is an astute scholar ; his critical literacy skills are well displayed in both his conversations and writing . It is a pleasure having him as my student .”
Julian has demonstrated strong leadership and organisational capabilities through his involvement as Peer Support Facilitator , Marcian Fraternity Executive Committee member and as the student leader overseeing the Prefect Morning Patrol Duty and International Education Trip to Hanoi . He has also volunteered his services in numerous school events such as the SJI Founder ’ s Day , SJI Inaugural Assembly and SJI Open House . In addition , he exhibited his interest in other areas such as his collaboration with the Public Utilities Board and Terra SG at the Sustainable Singapore Gallery , Marina Barrage to spread the message of water conservation and its benefits .
Julian constantly strives to create a community that is based on trust and brotherhood within SJI . He illustrates the very notion of what it means to be Lasallian where he seeks to create the sense of family within the student community in SJI . This very notion makes him a welldeserved recipient of the award .
