Design Thinking
The concept of Design Thinking hinges on the intrinsic human values of empathy , ingenuity and the ability to actualize one ’ s ideas . The desire to help those in need , accompanied by an urge for invention , have led to some of the greatest advancements in human history .
At the beginning of the programme , we were reintroduced to the Design Thinking process very quickly and formed our groups . We had to decide on what issue or topic we would like to work on that could make a difference in people ’ s lives . The final goal of the module was to come up and present an effective and necessary solution to a pre-existing problem accompanied by a prototype . It sounded simple but it certainly was not . Thankfully , with the help of the teachers , we worked with a Social Enterprise , The Gobblershop , and its TOWKAY programme which sells basic grocery materials at cheaper prices to the lower income families . Our journey led us to interact with Mr Janan Kwek , the CEO of Gobblershop , and his team , to better understand their business . We visited their warehouse to find out more about the challenges they faced . We also took to the streets and interviewed the various stakeholders to understand their needs . Throughout the stage of ideation , we were constantly encouraged to be as creative as possible with our solutions , but to remain focused on the users ’ needs . Finally , we presented our solutions to our teachers at the IP Special Programme showcase .
Taking further what they have learnt about Design Thinking , 4 students took part in SparkIT Design Thinking competition organised by MOE EdTech division in May 2018 . After several training sessions and two gruelling days of preparation at the Resorts World Sentosa , our efforts paid off when we clinched the ‘ Moonshot Award ’ amidst tough competition . Design Thinking has and will continue to inspire the entrepreneurial mindset in Josephians . It aligns with the Josephian spirit to be ‘ Men for Others ’ while also promoting the investigative and inquisitive mindset needed to shape future generations .
