Lasallian Distinguished Service Award

Ashley Tan Kai Li
( FN401 )
Ashley Tan Kai Li is an exemplary student who exhibits many ideals and values espoused by the school ; he is caring , responsible and gracious . Self-driven and intensely resilient , he is unafraid of hard work and strives always to give of his best in any task . His personable and good-natured disposition puts people at ease and has won him many friends and supporters .
Above all , Ashley is a servant leader . He has served SJI as a CCA leader , Peer Support Leader , Peer Support Facilitator and Fraternity Captain for Fintan House . This journey involved many responsibilities and careful planning to ensure that events ran smoothly . He however did not crumble under the pressure or complain about the work ; rather , he strived to be the best leader he could be and served the school to the best of his abilities .
As a Student Councillor , he helped organise Mahalo : SJI Carnival 2018 , specifically by liaising with the Parent Support Group to make the carnival a memorable one . Ms Wong Kah Yan , Student Council teacher , lauded his efforts , saying that in his work with the Parent Support Group , he was “ on task , diplomatic and thorough in his communication with parents . He also took on roles beyond his duty , helping the Stall Subcommittee .”
Ashley has also exemplified school values in various events he took participated in . He was involved in Inter-school Hockey competitions since he was in Secondary 1 and he always put in his best when representing the school . Although competitions were never easy , he never lost faith in his team but encouraged them to excel . As ‘ C ’ Division Captain in 2016 and ‘ B ’ Division Captain in 2018 , he strived always to be a good leader and build strong bonds within the Hockey community . Mr K Arul , teacher-in-charge of Hockey , states , “ Ashley is a responsible boy who is also an effective communicator . He led the Hockey Lasallian trip in 2017 and was instrumental in the successful completion of the project .”
Ms Wong Kah Yan says of his contribution to the Orientation Camp , “ He was meticulous but also able to keep the big picture in mind at all times . His confidence and ability to communicate clearly was very reassuring to those who worked with him .” Mrs Amy Chua , his form tutor in Secondary 4 , adds , “ Ashley is intelligent and driven . He is clear about what he wants to achieve and will prioritize and manage his time wisely to achieve his goals . He has the potential to go far in life .”
Ashley has never thought twice about giving back to his community , serving it with grace and determination to see things through . He has always strived to be a good Josephian , a Man for Others , and most importantly , a good friend . Whenever he sees his friends struggle , he takes the initiative to offer help , not only during school hours , but even after school , when he stays back to help them with their studies . Ashley serves with a big heart and deserves to be upheld as a model Josephian and an ideal Lasallian .
Ms Lynette Lim , his form tutor in Secondary 3 , is full of praise for him , asserts , “ Ashley is a confident and self-directed student leader who has a natural charisma and aura that draws people to him . In his stints as Overall-in-charge of Orientation Camp 1 and Peer Support Leader Training Camp , he displayed a selfless side that was really admirable . In a bid to lead the campfire successfully , he skipped his meals to ensure the smooth running of the evening . This was done despite his suffering from long-term gastric problems . Ashley is driven in his studies , performs his duties well in his CCA and is an all-rounder . He is definitely deserving of the Lasallian Distinguished Service Award .”
