Established in 2008 , the Lasallian Mentoring Programme aims to mentor primary school students from less privileged backgrounds , mainly providing academic guidance and socio-emotional support . Sessions are held every Saturday at Toa Payoh East CC for mentees from the neighbourhood primary schools . We implemented a one-to-one system , where each mentor is assigned to one mentee . This has built a close friendship between the pair and represents attachments that go beyond mentorship . Mentees have come to look up to mentors as older brothers and sisters .
The students are taught mainly English and Mathematics to build up their foundational skills . Because these are children who may be academically weaker , mentors are encouraged to tutor them according to their specific academic needs . More importantly , the programme aims to create a safe , harmonious community for the children , catering not only to their academics , but also their emotional needs . These children come from difficult backgrounds and mentors are therefore expected to go above and beyond to provide guidance and support to their mentee in their emotional development , which they may lack at home .
The Lasallian Mentoring Programme remains true to its Lasallian core values , serving the last , the lost and the least , in the spirit of community . Mentors include Lasallians from SJI and SJI International , as well as volunteers from RGS , who take care to emphasize the family at Toa Payoh East CC . This sense of community , and the bond that forms between mentor and mentee , is perhaps best seen in the many old boys and girls who return to the programme even after graduating .
