SJI Model United Nations ( MUN ) Conference
The SJI Model United Nations ( MUN ) Conference 2016 was held in SJI from 11-13 November , the fourth edition of our annual conference since its inception in 2013 .
The three-day conference was officially opened by our Principal , Fr Adrian Danker , SJ , who gave an inspiring speech on the theme of the conference . The theme of the 2016 conference was ‘ Non ducor , duco ’, in Latin means ‘ I am not led , I lead ’. It espoused the ideals of the organising team to promote youth activism and global citizenry and was a poignant reminder to delegates to find within themselves the political courage , to strive for consensus-building , even as they navigated through tenuous conflicts in their councils .
Growing in strength and widely recognised as a reputable event in the MUN circle amongst the schools in Singapore , this conference is entirely a student-initiated effort , organised by the leaders of the Society of International and Current Affairs , a CAS group in SJI ( Senior section ). A core team of 30 student leaders and 35 volunteers ran the conference helming seven different councils : General Assembly , World Health Organisation , Human Rights , Historical Security Crisis ,
Security Council , Kingsman Council and Futuristic Council debating hot button issues and problems in the world , attempting to find creative and sustainable solutions to mocked up global problems through dialogue and consensus building .
Two of SJIMUN ’ s niche councils , Kingsmen Council and Futuristic Council , were also a key part of this year ’ s conference . In Kingsmen Council , delegates represented their country ’ s intelligence agency , rather than the country itself , and faced an onslaught of crises . In Futuristic Council , delegates had to deal with a future world , and tackle an energy crisis all while grappling with unexpected developments .
The conference was attended by over 200 students from Junior Colleges and secondary schools such as Raffles Institution , Anglo Chinese School , NUS High , Victoria Junior College , Temasek Junior College , Nanyang Girls and Singapore Chinese Girls , who were engaged in invigorating debate .
