JOSEPHIAN ANNUAL 2016 • LEARNING JOURNEYS
Overseas Residential Programme
The Overseas Residential Programme ( ORP ) is a unique SJI programme catered to Secondary 4 students from the Integrated Programme . It aims to boost development of the boys in three core areas : physical , intellectual and socioemotional being . By placing them in an unfamiliar environment for three weeks , the students underwent a period of self-discovery , developed new cultural understanding as well as exemplified the spirit of a true Josephian .
This year , there were two concurrent programmes that ran from end May to mid-June 2016 , and students had a choice between two locations – Shangri-La ( China ) or Vietnam . With the unique cultural offerings of each country , students were able to learn from what they experienced , encountered and discovered .
The inaugural ORP in Vietnam saw the boys exploring different parts of Northern Vietnam such as Hanoi , Halong Bay and Sapa . There , the students were involved in community engagement projects with Thuy An Centre and a primary school in Sapa , helping them to make crafts for their fund raising project and building a road respectively . The students also had time to experience Vietnamese culture and history through pottery making and fabric weaving , visits to museums , and exploration of propaganda art . They also had the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities such as kayaking and trekking , which allowed them to enjoy and appreciate the natural settings of Vietnam . The programme concluded with the students taking part in a homestay
